Police will continue its shoreline and water-based search this morning for a swimmer who remains unaccounted for at Opoutere Beach.
Emergency services were alerted to the beach north of Whangamatā yesterday at around 11:25am after individuals saw a group of seven signalling for help.
Six people were pulled from the water with one in a critical condition, four who were in minor to moderate conditions and one swimmer was unable to be revived.
Acting Senior Sergeant Will Hamilton said a fixed-wing aircraft will also be used in the search for the seventh swimmer and asked if anyone found items of interest on the coastline to hand them in to Police at Whangamatā Surf Club.
Police also confirmed on Tuesday evening a man who was located by rescue helicopter after he went missing in the water near the Whangamatā estuary was unable to be revived.
His death will be referred to the Coroner.
