Coromandel bakeries will participate in a Pink Bun Day on February 14 to raise funds for Whitianga Lions and Mercury Bay Lions Project Mammogram.
The project aims to raise $350,000 to buy a 3D mammogram unit for Whitianga to ensure early detection for Coromandel residents.
Co-ordinator Mike Brown said while the new unit was the focus of the project, celebrating life through fun events like Pink Bun Day was also important for community wellbeing.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Pak’nSave Thames, Tairua Four Square, Whitianga New World, Bay Bakery in Whitianga, and Coromandel Four Square for their enthusiasm in being part of our first Pink Bun Day,” he said.
“They will be putting their best pink-iced bun, or muffin, forward on the day with donations from the sale of every pink bun going to Project Mammogram.
“Many of the bakeries we spoke to about this event said they wanted to support Project Mammogram because they really believed we need this service based here as essential healthcare.”
Mr Brown said Whitianga and Mercury Bay Lions hoped the community would get behind the day.
“If you want a few pink buns on the day, it might be wise to let the store know in advance,” he said.
“We’d hate you to miss out on this delicious bit of fun!”
