Coromandel MP Scott Simpson has postponed his public information meetings on February 17 due to the devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.
“We’re now in a National State of Emergency and on balance I’ve taken the decision to postpone these meetings while we focus our recovery to our battered region,” Mr Simpson said.
“I still plan to have information meetings but now is just not the right time to be holding them,” Mr Simpson said.
“The slip on SH25A (Kopu-Hikuai) is still moving and it is unrealistic to have answers about what is going to happen until the experts can properly assess the situation.”
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and the Thames Coromandel District Council also were busy focusing on the current situation, he added, and one of the meeting venues was a designated welfare centre.
The three public meetings were to discuss the impact of SH25A being closed, and to provide an update on the peninsula’s roading status. Meetings were to be held in Whitianga, Whangamata and Thames.
A new date has not yet been announced.
