An evening of celebration for Hauraki students and their creative expressions took place last month. The Hauraki Plains College community celebrated its Cultural Arts Award evening on September 25. Hauraki year-13 student Joel Hunt, who was the MC on the night, told The Profile it was a wonderful showcase of the school’s creative skills.
It was a chance for students to be commended and awarded for their efforts throughout the year for their selected disciplines, he said. The different art forms acknowledged were visual arts, drama, dance, fashion design, kapa haka, media, music and photography.
The young MC also received a few awards himself – the Leadership Award for guitar ensemble, Brooks Family Cup for contribution to drama and the Rhodes Green Trophy for contribution to The Arts at Hauraki Plains College.
Joel said one of the most significant parts of the evening was when a new award, in memory of the late Trevor Benns, was presented to the inaugural recipient, Matthew Tegg. “This trophy recognises a student who has contributed the most overall to music at HPC.”
As the award was presented to Matthew, the kapa haka group honoured him with a haka. “It was a good turn out for friends, whānau and our local community,” Joel said.
