The sun beamed down in the Hauraki Plains for a day of athletics, friendly competition and positive vibes on February 25. The Hauraki Plains College Athletics Day saw students compete in a variety of track and field events, while decked out in house group colours, face paint and accessories. There were also sightings of students in banana and wookiee costumes out on the fields. But the main theme of the day was to encourage a Sport Waikato initiative the school was implementing: Positive Vibes Only. The idea was about creating environments that were enjoyable for everyone, whether they’re a player, coach, referee, administrator or supporter. HPC year 13 student Rhona McInnes told The Profile it was a wonderful day where the school community got together. “I constantly heard laughter and encouragement as everyone enjoyed being active and supporting each other in a fun and lively atmosphere.” Year 13 student Benjamin Beard said it stood out as one of his most memorable school memories to date, with perfect weather and laughter and ice cream with friends. While fellow student Fergus Ball said it was good to see everyone participate even though it was hot. “Everyone enjoyed it and was really positive.”
