Metservice has predicted possible surface flooding and slips for the Coromandel Peninsula under an orange heavy rain warning for the area between midday and midnight on May 9.
The warning is set to bring periods of heavy rain and possible squally thunderstorms.
Metservice said with soils already saturated, surface flooding and slips are likely to cause problems in areas like the Coromandel Peninsula.
“Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous,” Metservice said.
“Around 50 to 70 mm is expected, but possibly more in localised areas.
“Intensities of 10 to 15 mm per hour, but thunderstorms and downpours of 40 mm per hour or more are possible in localised areas.”
