More than 175 custom and classic vehicles will rev into Hugh Hayward Domain on December 27 for the annual Ngātea Customs and Classics and Van Revival.
Organiser Rob ‘Fish’ Mackay told The Profile it would be the sixth year the event had been held and the community response had always been “really awesome”.
“There’s a real base for classic and muscle cars in the area and generally the community has been really good in getting behind it,” he said.
“The initial reason for me starting up the car show was that I worked directly across the road from the venue [at Total Auto] and we’re on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for breakdowns, and I wanted something in my area that I could attend.
“So Ngātea Customs and Classics and then on year two of my car show because I’m into custom vans I incorporated a van show called the van revival, that’s a separate show within the car show.”
Fish said he expected more than 175 “out of the ordinary” vehicles including hot rods, custom vans, motorcycles, and V8’s to be on display at this year’s event.
“We had 177 last year and if we can equal or top that, that’s a great thing but we have room for 200 cars and can expand if we need to,” he said.
“We ask vehicles to be in by about 9:30am, and we will have prizegiving from 12:30am to 1pm.
“We have awards for best van, bike, muscle car, classic car, best club turnout, station wagon, ute or truck, best vintage vehicles and raffles on the day as well.”
Fish said it cost $5 for vehicle entry and a gold coin donation for public entry.
“It’s $5 entry per vehicle but if you bring your family in the vehicle it’s still $5 and the walk-in public we ask for a gold coin donation or if you have a family just chuck some dollars in the kitty, we’re not too strict on that,” he said.
Fish said the money raised at past events had been donated to local organisations, including St John Cadets, and this year he chose Hauraki Rowing Club. “I’ve had a couple of daughters coming through the ranks of rowing, my youngest daughter Emma was in the rowing club this year,” he said.
“They have regattas all over Karāpiro and the South Island, and there’s a South Island trip coming up next year, so we’re going to donate the money for some equipment for one of their trips.”
Fish said last year’s event raised just under $900 and he topped it up to make it $900 and was donated to Ngātea Volunteer Fire Brigade.
