One runner will reign supreme in the King of the Mountain race at Pauanui on January 2.
Georgina Bond, who is contracted to run the event by Pauanui Sport and Recreation Club, said many people were happy the event will return after last year’s cancellation due to Covid-19.
“It’s an iconic regular event on the Pauanui calendar where they race up the mountain [Pauanui Summit] then they run down back over the rocks [at Cave Bay] and it starts and finishes at the Pauanui Surf Lifesaving Club,” she said.
“We usually race between 120 and 150 [competitors], it has been building a bit over the years and does attract people from out of town to come and race it because it’s quite an iconic event for Paunaui.
“The view from the top is superb, and we have cash prizes for the winning category and some spot prizes also at the prizegiving.”
Georgina said it cost $30 to enter the event and registrations could be made at Pauanui Surf Lifesaving Club on the day at 6:30am before the race begins at 8am.
