Hauraki District Mayor Toby Adams pitched in to help the community save Ngatea homes from flood waters after torrential rain last night.
Mayor Adams, councillor Ray Broad and council staff delivered sandbags after water threatened to enter several homes in different areas of the Hauraki Plains town.
The flood waters receded after a time, with houses needing help saved from flooding.
“Thanks to Mayor Toby, Cr Ray Broad, Karen Steffek, Dallan and the fantastic Ngatea community for filling and delivering sandbags,” council said.
Meanwhile, homes in Kaiaua lost power last night and were trapped due to flooding. Council said it had teams checking on flooding and the roads in the area.
SH2 Mangatawhiri to Maramarua
Due to flooding and slips, SH2 is closed between Mangatawhiri Rd and Kopuku Rd. There is a detour available but please allow an extra 30 minutes travel time for the detour and expect delays.
SH2 Pokeno to Mangatarata
Due to a large slip, SH2 is closed between SH25 and SH27. Expect delays through this area and take extra care
Thames-Coromandel District Council reports day four of this ex tropical storm revealed another wild night on the Coromandel with more than 130mm of rain in the past 24 hours.
At 8am Monday, January 30, roading updates include:
*The Thames Coast Road (SH25) from Waiomu to Coromandel Town is closed.
*The Thames Coast Road (SH25) from Tararū to Tapu is closed.
*SH25 is closed between Coromandel Town and Te Rerenga due to multiple slips around Whangapoua Hill.
* State Highway 25A Kōpū-Hikuai is closed until further notice.
* The 309 and Tapu-Coroglen Roads also remain closed until further notice.
The area around Coromandel Town is completely isolated.
While travel is still very restrictive, motorists in communities between Matarangi and Whangamatā can commute and head off the Peninsula via Waihi and Paeroa.
There have been power outages overnight in Thames and Te Puru.
Council assessment teams are still reporting, with another update later this morning.
